As I work primarily with acrylic and cotton yarn — both more forgiving than delicate fibers like wool — a little extra care still goes a long way toward keeping the stitches crisp and the shape true.
Both acrylic and cotton can typically handle a gentle, cold machine cycle if you need it. That said, hand washing in cold water is always the safer choice — it's easier on the stitches and helps prevent fuzz over time.
Skip the dryer. High heat can cause acrylic to lose its shape or develop a slight sheen, and cotton to shrink. Lay your piece flat on a towel to air dry instead — this keeps the sizing and shape exactly as made.
Avoid wringing or twisting a wet piece, since stretched fibers don't always bounce back. Gently reshape it while it's still damp and let it dry flat, and it'll hold its form beautifully.
Fold rather than hang crochet pieces when storing them — hanging can stretch the stitches out of shape over time, especially for heavier pieces like blankets.
